ENL has continued the use of Santillana “Spotlight on English.”  We have found it effective, particularly in vocabulary development and Literacy through the content areas of Science and Social Studies. It is diverse in its teachings, and allows for differentiated instruction based on language proficiency and aligns skills and reading strategies from the mainstream classroom.  

 

Another program that is utilized to accelerate language learning, especially for newcomers is Imagine Learning. Imagine Learning is an award-winning language and literacy software program that features interactive activities, videos, and games. It’s research-based, instructionally differentiated, and incredibly fun to use. Imagine Learning is built specifically to address Common Core State Standards. Students are immediately introduced to a diverse array of critical content that will prepare them for the demands of college and career-level reading. The program features activities designed to help students broaden their foundational language and speaking/listening skills, while interacting with a variety of informational and literary texts. This kind of exposure to literature and direct instruction in reading, speaking, and listening skills, better equips students to succeed in life outside of the classroom. 

 

Finally, for our transitioning students, a program from Abrams Learning Trends is being implemented. Content Area Reading Success (Science and Social Studies). Content Area Reading Success teaches essential reading skills and comprehension strategies in the context of on-level informational texts. The units, topics, and multiple passages contained in each level expose students to a variety of text structures while teaching them the most useful skills and strategies to understand the content of the passage.
