 STEAM  

 

S.T.E.A.M.( Grades 1, 2, and 3)  

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math 
 
STEAM is the natural fusion of "arts, creative, and self-awareness studies with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)-to engage the WHOLE child and PROMOTE high achievement in all areas. Whether or not today's P.S.100Q students go on to be artists, teachers, doctors or lawyers: whatever career paths they may choose, we should fully understand that the challenges their generation faces will demand CREATIVE solutions. We should also expect that in the coming decades, many of our awesome leaders will come from art and design backgrounds.  
 
S-T-E-M with the "A"-includes:  
*a working knowledge of manual and physical arts including-"how to" (engineering) and fitness (body systems lessons), Earth science lessons, as well as FUN science experiments;  
*a better understanding of the past and present cultures though the fine arts; 
*a rhythmic and emotional use of science and math with the VISUAL arts-with a strong focus on recycling and repurposing consumable materials 
*as well as an deep understanding of social developments (cooperative learning), human nature (ethics) with the liberal arts. 
 
STEAM is complementary with 21st century skills, particularly the "4C's" of creativity-collaboration, critical thinking, and communication; and is consistently gaining traction across the country with support from a wide range of organizations including the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation. 
 

 

Science  

 

Science is happening on all grades in a big way at PS 100Q. 

The 2nd and 3rd graders are all involved in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) in their classrooms. The second graders are also studying the metamorphosis of a darkling beetle. They are getting up close and personal with their magnifying glasses and observing the stages of development from a tiny egg, to a worm, and then an adult beetle.  

 

The third grade has been exploring matter and are now delving into the subject of density. They have discovered that density relates to whether an abject will sink or float! At the end of our unit on matter the third graders will be making Oobleck! Ask them all about it!! 

The fourth grade studies food chains and webs, where they were able to observe the behavior of American anoles while taking care of them and feeding them live crickets! They will also explore electricity and magnetism.  

The science room has a few new additions, this year.  We now have a colony of Dubai roaches and superworms, both of which are used to feed the Rankin Dragons which have settled in well, to life at P.S.100.  They are perfect classroom pets, and the students are fascinated watching them eat the live bugs everyday.   

 

Everyone is actively engaged, conducting hands on experiments in their classroom and looking forward to the science fair. 

 

            

Social Studies 

What is Social Studies? Why is it important? 

Social Studies is the study of history, geography, economics, government, and civics.  It is the study of humanity, of people and events that have individually and collectively shaped our nation and the world.  A strong and effective Social Studies program helps students make sense of the world in which they live, allows them to make connections between major ideas and their own lives, and it helps them see themselves as active members of a global community as well as participating citizens of a democracy. 

 

CAT-CREATIVE ARTS TEAM (C.A.T.) 

with Ms. Ringgold, Ms. Mullen & Ms. Flythe 

The arts are alive in PS100Q. The Creative Arts Team, affectionately known as CAT is in its eighth year.  CAT is a special program unique to PS100 which offers our students exposure to the different art disciplines: visual arts, theatre, music and dance. All students experience these art disciplines throughout the year by switching to a new discipline in each trimester thus enabling them to become lifelong learners in the arts.   

 

Each year, Ms. Mullen, with the help of her fourth and fifth grade Theater classes, produces a show. The students choose which show they want to do, auditions are held and the students vote on who will perform each character. During rehearsals they learn about blocking, performing with emotion, projection and set design. The students help with the creation of the scenery, props and costumes and also work as the stage crew.  

 

Ms. Ringgold focuses on how to repurpose recycled materials in the creation of unique art pieces. Her art lessons encourage the growth of fine motor skill in the primary grades. Her students’ work will be showcased. 

 

Ms. Flythe imparts cultural awareness to her students through dance. She showcases different musical genres: Jazz, Latin, Country and Disco. She connects the cultures by utilizing the dance form of line dancing. Her students perform these dances in a show. 

 

Technology          

     

 

  • The students and staff of P.S. 100Q are very fortunate to have many forms of technology available to them.  Each classroom is equipped with 1-2 desktops and a class set of laptops.  All classes have a SMART Board or Promethian Board.  Some classrooms have a set of IPads to support their programs.    

 

  • The rooms are equipped with a listening center, consisting of a CD player or tape recorder and headsets.   

 

  • Our building is wireless which allows our students to access online resources such as Max Scholar, Mathletics, Moby Max, Think Central, Brain Pop and Imagine Learning.   

 

  • We currently have a subscription to School Messenger to keep our parent community aware of special issues! 

 

  • Kindergarten classes are working very hard on a program called Typing Instructor to learn proper keyboarding skills.   

  • 1st graders are producing a digital animal alphabet book.  They are improving their reading skills while having fun and learning typing skills.

  • 2nd and 3rd grade students are part of the STEAM program.  We are beginning our adventures with coding.  Here, 2nd and 3rd graders will learn 21st century skills to create programming codes.  

 

Instrumental Music

LTCE/IM is an interactive music program with connections to mathematics, social studies, science and language arts.  The program includes woodwind and percussion instruments, keyboards, recorders, chorus and general music.  

 

All recorder students begin by earning skill belts in Recorder Karate.  The Music Buddies program gives students a chance for extra practice and coaching, and enables those who do not have LTCE, a chance to learn recorder.   Many recorder students advance and participate in the Long Island Recorder Festival.   PS100Q is one of the largest participants, with over fifty students annually.  

 

Our students participate in the New York State Schools Music Association (NYSSMA) Festival at Marine Park Middle School.  Woodwind and recorder students perform for and are rated by NYSSMA judges. Third grade students begin by performing recorder duets.  Fourth graders progress to more difficult duets and recorder solos.  Soloists are also required to memorize scales and sight read unfamiliar music.  Fifth grade musicians are challenged to perform solo on clarinet or saxophone.  As a testament to the effectiveness of our program, middle school students who do not have instrumental music at school often return to perform at NYSSMA with PS100Q.  Each year an increasing number of students participate and earn “Outstanding” and “Excellent” ratings for playing music at greater levels of difficulty.  

 

Students, who perform well in both the recorder festival and NYSSMA evaluations, earn the opportunity to learn clarinet or saxophone. This select program, 12 fourth grade clarinet players and 12 fifth grade saxophone players, teaches strong music reading skills and requires student dedication to independently practice its rigorous material. 

Our outstanding fourth grade music students participate in the Nassau County Music Educators All-County PEAK festival, with 300 of the top music students from Nassau County. P.E.A.K. is a program that brings together Parents, Educators and Kids, a select group of fourth grade students for a day of music making.  This unique experience allows parents a window into the types of music classes that their children are having at school.  Students have the opportunity to connect with their peers who are also passionate about musical making. Our PS100 students walk away with more confidence in their performance skills and fabulous musical memories.  

 

Three hundred Instrumental Music students have the wonderful opportunity to perform at historic Carnegie Hall as part of Link-up the Orchestra Swings and Musical Explorers programs.  

 

The Link-up Swings Program gives the students in grades three, four and five a chance to perform on recorder with a live orchestra, and this year with a jazz band, as well.  Students have met important musicians of the Swing Era and embraced the challenge of performing syncopated rhythms with swing eight notes. They have learned about improvisation and 12 bar blues.  For the last three years, our recorder students have been selected to perform on stage with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s  

 

Musical Explorers develops listening and singing skills as the students in grades one and two learn songs from different cultures.   In the fall, the students participated in a live performance including Blue Grass Music, Chinese Traditional and Sudanese Celebration Songs. In the spring, they will experience Calypso music, Zulal Armenian Folk songs and circa ’95 Hip Hop. 

 

The chorus program (over 90 students) is by audition and is offered to students in the 3rd, 4th and 5 grades that meet academic and musical criteria.  Our talented vocalists learn how to understand multi-part octavos and perform interesting musical pieces.    

 

The general music program includes drumming, xylophones, rhythm instruments, singing and movement.   Students learn to connect the syllables of chanted words to rhythm patterns; building both speech fluency and an understanding of mathematical relationships.  The program’s wide variety of music introduces the students to many different cultures and its patriotic and ‘folk’ songs help teach our Nation’s history. 

 

A small group of PS100Q students will have the opportunity to pilot the Little Kids Rock.  It is a modern band program and learn how to play rock music on the keyboard. This program teaches popular music in the same natural way that one would learn language skills. This is a new program to PS100Q and will offer students another gateway to having a positive musical experience. 

 

PS100Q is alive with the sound of music, from early before class, each period, lunchtime, throughout the day and after school!
